Johannes ‘Hans’ Weertman, 1925-2018

Home 9 News 9 In Memoriam 9 Johannes ‘Hans’ Weertman, 1925-2018

It is with great sadness that the IGS reports the passing of Johannes Weertman, Walter P. Murphy Professor Emeritus in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. Hans passed away on 13 October 2018 after a brief, unexpected illness according to his son, Bruce Weertman. Hans was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, among other recognitions, received the IGS Seligman Crystal in 1983 “for outstanding scientific contribution to glaciology so that the subject is now enriched.” He is remembered for having contributed strongly to the development of modern understanding of basal sliding, ice-shelf flow, marine ice-sheet instability and glacier surging. He will be greatly missed by our community.

The accompanying photograph shows Seligman Crystal awardees present at the 2002 IGS International Symposium on Fast Glacier Flow in Yakutat.
